The D7 visa is for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals with passive income (pensions, investments, rental income, dividends, or remote employment income). Applicants must show stable monthly income of at least EUR 920 (2026 minimum wage). Additional income required for family members: 50% extra per spouse/dependent parent (EUR 460), 30% extra per child (EUR 276). Must live in Portugal at least 16 months during the first 2 years. The residence permit is valid for 2 years, renewable for 3-year periods. Citizenship possible after 5 years (may increase to 7-10 years under proposed law changes).

Portugal does not have a separate journalist-specific visa category. Journalists from visa-required countries apply for a standard Schengen C-type visa with journalism/media as the stated purpose. The D1 visa is for non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who have secured employment with a Portuguese employer. A registered employment contract with a salary at or above the minimum wage (EUR 920/month in 2026) is mandatory. An IEFP (Instituto do Emprego e Formacao Profissional) declaration confirming the vacancy could not be filled by Portuguese/EU/EEA citizens may be required. After arriving in Portugal, the holder must apply for a residence permit at AIMA within 4 months. The residence permit is valid for 2 years, renewable for 3-year periods.
