The Key Employee Initiative (KEI) is Malta's fast-track work permit option for highly skilled professionals. Processing takes only 5 working days. Applicants must have a managerial or highly technical position with a minimum annual gross salary of EUR 45,000 and proof of relevant experience. Initially valid for 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years at a time.

    Must have a job offer for a managerial or highly technical role. Minimum annual gross salary of EUR 45,000. Must demonstrate proof of relevant experience.

How to apply

  1. Document gathering

    Gather passport, employment contract meeting KEI salary threshold, CV, criminal record certificate, health insurance, and accommodation proof.

  2. Online application

    Employer submits KEI application via the Identità online portal with all supporting documents.

  3. Fee payment

    Pay the application fee of EUR 600.

  4. Processing wait

    Fast-track processing of 5 working days.

  5. Visa collection

    Once approved, obtain D visa if required and enter Malta. Collect residence card from Identità after biometrics.
