For artists planning to stay in Germany for more than 90 days, a national visa (Type D) is required. Employed artists obtain a residence permit under Section 19c AufenthG (employment regulations). Self-employed/freelance artists typically apply under Section 21(5) AufenthG (the colloquially named 'artist visa' or Kuenstlervisum), which is technically a freelance residence permit. Requirements include demonstrating that the artistic activity will have a positive economic impact or that there is regional demand for the work. The artist must show adequate financing and health insurance coverage. This visa is popular among artists in Berlin and other cultural hubs.
