National Type D visa for full-time studies at a Luxembourg higher education institution, including the University of Luxembourg, or for participation in a student exchange programme. Requires a two-step procedure: first apply for temporary authorisation to stay (autorisation de séjour) from the Immigration Directorate, then apply for Type D visa at the embassy. No fee for the authorisation to stay application; €80 fee applies for the residence permit upon arrival. Students can work up to 15 hours per week during term and full-time during vacations. After completing studies, graduates can apply for a residence permit as a job-seeker or company creator, valid for up to 9 months. A mandatory medical examination (including TB screening) is required after arrival.

How to apply

Document gathering
Secure enrollment in a recognized Luxembourg higher education institution and gather admission letter, transcripts, financial proof, health insurance, and accommodation confirmation.

Online application
Submit application for temporary authorisation to stay (autorisation de séjour) to the Immigration Directorate of the Ministry of Home Affairs. This must be done from abroad, not from within Luxembourg.
