Only the educational institution can submit the application. The institution must be an IND-recognized sponsor. Students may work up to 16 hours per week alongside studies. MVV-exempt nationals (US, CA, AU, NZ, JP, KR, GB, MC, VA) can enter without the MVV and apply for the residence permit directly.

    Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals requiring a residence permit for study exceeding 90 days.

  • Purpose of visit

    Must be enrolled in a full-time study programme at a recognized Dutch higher education institution that is an IND-recognized sponsor.

How to apply

  1. Document gathering

    Obtain admission letter from Dutch institution. Gather passport, proof of funds, and any required academic transcripts or language test results.

  2. Online application

    The educational institution submits the combined MVV and residence permit application to the IND on your behalf via their online portal.

  3. Fee payment

    Pay the IND application fee of EUR 254. Payment is arranged through the educational institution or directly.

  4. Processing wait

    IND processes the application. Processing time is typically 60-90 days.

  5. Visa collection

    Once approved, collect the MVV sticker from the Dutch embassy/consulate in your country of residence. MVV-exempt nationals skip this step.

  6. Biometrics

    After arrival in the Netherlands, visit the IND desk to provide biometrics and collect the residence permit card.
