Non-EU/EEA nationals must apply for a residence permit to study in Denmark. The permit includes limited work rights: up to 90 hours per month during September-May, and full-time during June-August. After completing studies, graduates may receive a 6-month or 3-year job-seeking permit depending on programme type. The educational institution must be publicly accredited or have a board member appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. Application fee is DKK 3,060. Financial self-support requirement is DKK 7,426 per month (2026 level).

Required for all non-EU/EEA nationals wishing to study in Denmark. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals do not need a residence permit.

Must be admitted to a full degree programme or exchange programme at a Danish higher education institution approved by the state.

Must demonstrate disposable funds of DKK 7,426 per month (2026 level). If tuition has been paid or course fee covers room and board, financial documentation may be waived.

How to apply

Document gathering
Obtain admission/acceptance letter from a Danish higher education institution, prepare passport copies (all pages including blank), financial documentation, and tuition payment proof.

Online application
Create a case order ID on the SIRI website (newtodenmark.dk), complete the ST1 application form online or download the printable version.

Fee payment
Pay the DKK 3,060 application fee through the online case order system.

Biometrics
Record biometrics (facial photo and fingerprints) within 14 days of online application submission at a Danish diplomatic mission abroad or a SIRI branch office in Denmark.

Document submission
Submit case order ID along with all required documentation and biometrics at the Danish diplomatic mission.

Processing wait
Wait for residence permit processing. Standard processing time is approximately 2 months.

Visa collection
Receive residence permit decision. If approved, collect biometric residence card or receive a long-stay visa (Type D) to enter Denmark and collect card upon arrival.
