Foreign media representatives may enter Canada as business visitors to report on events without a work permit, provided they are employed by and paid by a foreign media organization. Activities must be reporting, filming, or covering news events in Canada for foreign audiences. If employed by a Canadian media outlet, a work permit is required. Entry is under the visitor visa or eTA category depending on nationality.

How to apply

  1. Document gathering

    Gather press credentials, letter from foreign media employer, details of assignment in Canada.

  2. Online application

    Apply for eTA (if visa-exempt) or visitor visa (if visa-required) indicating purpose as media/journalism.

  3. Fee payment

    Pay standard eTA ($7) or visitor visa ($100) fee.
