Required for nationals of 14 specific countries who need to transit through the international zone of Oslo Airport (Gardermoen) when travelling between two non-Schengen countries. NOT required if the traveler holds a valid Schengen visa, a valid visa or residence permit from the USA, Canada, Japan, UK, or any EU/Schengen country. Important: The transit area at Oslo Airport is CLOSED between 11 PM and 6 AM. If your connection requires staying during these hours, you must clear Norwegian border control and will need a regular Schengen visitor visa instead.

Holders of diplomatic and service/official passports from certain countries enjoy visa-free access to Norway beyond the standard Schengen visa-free list. This includes EU/EEA nationals and specific bilateral agreements. Albanian diplomatic passport holders (accredited ambassadors to Norway and their families only), Indonesian diplomatic and service passport holders, Jordanian diplomatic passport holders, Kazakhstani diplomatic passport holders, and Laotian diplomatic passport holders are exempt. Diplomats accredited to Norway or Norwegian international organizations have separate residence arrangements through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For longer-term foreign correspondent postings exceeding 90 days, a residence permit for work is required. Norway has strong press freedom protections (regularly ranked #1 globally in press freedom).

Citizens of these countries can visit Norway and the entire Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business meetings, or family visits. They cannot work in Norway during their visa-free stay. Some countries require biometric passports (e.g., Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine). The 90-day limit applies across ALL Schengen countries combined. ETIAS authorization will be required from Q4 2026.

Norway's primary work immigration permit for qualified professionals. Requires a concrete job offer from a Norwegian employer for a position that requires higher education or completed vocational training. The position must normally be full-time (minimum 80%). Pay and working conditions must not be less favorable than Norwegian standards. The employer can apply on behalf of the worker. Key industries include IT, engineering, healthcare, oil and gas, maritime, and finance. After 3 years of continuous employment, the worker may apply for permanent residence.
