EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Swiss nationals enjoy full freedom of movement within Romania. No visa or residence permit required for any duration. Right to live and work freely. National ID card or passport sufficient for entry. Must register with the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) if staying more than 3 months.

Nationals of Annex II countries under EU Regulation 2018/1806 may enter Romania and the Schengen Area without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Romania became a full Schengen member on January 1, 2025 (land borders) following air/sea borders opening March 31, 2024. ETIAS pre-travel authorization (EUR 7) will be required from Q4 2026. The EES (Entry/Exit System) began operations on October 12, 2025. Holders of valid Schengen visas issued by other member states may also enter Romania.

Standard Schengen Type C visa (symbol C/TU) for tourism purposes. Nationals of Annex I countries under EU Regulation 2018/1806 must apply at the Romanian embassy, consulate, or authorized visa application center. Romania issues uniform Schengen visas valid across all Schengen member states. Applications may be submitted up to 6 months before travel. Multiple-entry visas may be issued for frequent travelers.

How to apply

  1. Document gathering

    Gather all required documents including passport, photos, insurance, financial proof, accommodation proof, and flight reservations.

  2. Online application

    Complete the Schengen visa application form. Pre-fill online at evisa.mae.ro to streamline in-person submission.

  3. Appointment booking

    Book an appointment at the Romanian embassy, consulate, or authorized visa application center in your country of residence.

  4. Fee payment

    Pay the visa application fee of EUR 90 (adults) at the time of submission. Additional service fees may apply at visa application centers.

  5. Document submission

    Submit all documents in person at the embassy, consulate, or visa application center during your appointment.

  6. Biometrics

    Provide biometric data (10 fingerprints and digital photograph) unless biometrics were collected for another Schengen visa within the past 59 months.

  7. Processing wait

    Wait for processing, typically 15 calendar days. May take up to 45 days if additional checks are required.

  8. Visa collection

    Collect your passport with the visa sticker from the embassy, consulate, or visa application center.
