Slovenia issues seasonal work permits (dovoljenje za sezonsko delo) for short-term seasonal employment, primarily in agriculture, forestry, hospitality, and tourism sectors. For stays up to 90 days, a work permit is issued without a residence permit. For seasonal work exceeding 90 days (up to 6 months), a Single Permit for seasonal work is required. Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia have traditionally been major recipients of Slovenian seasonal work permits due to bilateral labor agreements.

Family reunification allows spouses, registered partners, minor children (under 18), and other dependent family members to join a third-country national legally residing in Slovenia with a valid residence permit. Family members receive a temporary residence permit that allows them to work in Slovenia. The Single Permit (Enotno dovoljenje za prebivanje in delo) is Slovenia's combined work and residence permit for third-country nationals. It is the primary route for employment-based immigration to Slovenia. The employer initiates the process by applying to the Employment Service of Slovenia (ZRSZ) for a labor market test, confirming the position cannot be filled by a Slovenian/EU citizen. The Single Permit is valid for 1 year and is initially tied to the specific employer. After 1 year, the holder may change employers freely. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, the holder may apply for permanent residence. Minimum salary must meet Slovenian minimum wage requirements (EUR 1,253.90 gross/month as of 2025, adjusted annually). Certain occupations on the shortage list may have expedited processing.

The EU Blue Card is the European work permit for highly qualified workers with a university degree. For Slovenia, the minimum gross annual salary threshold is 1.5 times the average gross annual salary in Slovenia (approximately EUR 35,000-38,000 gross/year depending on annual updates). The Blue Card allows intra-EU mobility after 12 months. Holders can apply for long-term resident status after 5 years. No labor market test is required for Blue Card applications. Family members can apply for family reunification.
