Apply at least 3 months before planned arrival. Processing takes 8-12 weeks. Students may work up to 15 hours per week during term time after 6 months of study. Cantonal approval needed.

All non-EU/EFTA nationals studying in Switzerland for more than 90 days, including visa-exempt nationals.
Financial
Must demonstrate access to minimum CHF 21,000 per academic year for living expenses, plus tuition fees.

How to apply

Document gathering
Apply to and receive acceptance from a recognized Swiss university or educational institution. Prepare financial proof, health insurance, accommodation, CV, motivation letter, and language certificates.
Appointment booking
Contact the Swiss embassy/consulate at least 3 months before planned entry. Schedule visa interview appointment.
Document submission
Submit all documents in person at the Swiss embassy/consulate. Pay visa fee.
Interview
Attend interview at the Swiss embassy/consulate. Be prepared to discuss study plans, financial situation, and return plans.
Processing wait
Embassy forwards application to cantonal migration office for approval. Processing takes 8-12 weeks.
Visa collection
Collect passport with Type D visa. Upon arrival in Switzerland, register at the cantonal migration office within 14 days to receive B permit (student).
