Airport Transit Visa (ATV/Type A) required for nationals of specific countries when transiting through the international zone of an Italian airport. Does NOT allow the holder to leave the international transit area or enter Italian territory. Exemptions: holders of a valid Schengen visa (Type C), national long-stay visa (Type D), or residence permit from a Schengen state; holders of valid visas for Canada, Japan, or the United States when traveling to/from the issuing country; family members of EU/EEA citizens holding a valid residence card.

For nationals of Annex I countries who need to transit through Italian territory (leave the airport international zone) en route to a non-Schengen destination. This is a standard Schengen Type C visa issued for transit purposes. Maximum stay is typically 5 days per transit. Annex II (visa-free) nationals do not need this visa for transit.
